Installing a gun safe in your home is a great way to keep your firearm collection safe and secure. Gun safes, especially ones made from thicker gauge steel, have the added advantage of being heat resistant and fireproof, protecting your valuable guns in the event of a house fire. It’s important to store all of your guns in a proper safe to ensure they remain out of the hands of children and criminals and to ensure they are protected in the event of a fire. Contrary to popular belief, it’s much easier than you may think to install a gun safe, especially when you follow the basic steps below:
1. Find a Good Spot
There are numerous possible locations where you can put in a gun safe within your home. The basement is a very popular place because it is one of the least-traveled parts of the home, preventing wandering eyes and hands from accessing your firearms. You can also opt to install your gun safe in the wall using a hidden gun safe configuration that masks it completely for unsuspecting onlookers. The spot you choose should have a floor that is strong enough to bare the weight of the case, which can oftentimes exceed 400 pounds when stocked with firearms.
2. Move the Gun Safe Into Position
After selecting a suitable spot for your gun safe it’s time to move it into position. When selecting a location for your safe, it’s important to find an area that will allow full and easy access to the safe. The door should be able to open easily without obstacles or walls getting in the way. The floor should be strong enough to support the weight of the gun safe with all of your firearms loaded in it. The gun safe should not rub up against any walls, as this can damage the walls and devalue your home.
3. Secure the Safe
After selecting a proper location for your gun safe you should use a hand truck (or dolly) to facilitate the moving of your safe (lighter safes being the exception). A dolly is a simple cart that has two wheels and a platform with handles that makes it much easier to move heavy objects. Use the dolly to move the safe into the selected location. Use at least three people to remove the case from the dolly and position it into its designated spot. Next you should use some type of system to secure the safe to either the wall or floor to prevent thieves or burglars from making off with your safe AND guns.
Before moving your safe into position it’s recommended to either locate spots for securing your gun safe or make your own anchor points for securing the safe. Ideally, you will want to use heavy duty anchor bolts or lag screws to hold the safe down. You can also use some type of heavy duty chain along with a padlock that should be located behind or underneath the safe. This will make it much more difficult for would-be thieves to cut the chains and make off with your precious guns. Always make sure the door is able to open and is free of obstacles or obstructions. You’d be surprised how often people spend a lot of time anchoring the safe only to realize something prevents the door from fully opening.
While installing a gun safe in your home can be accomplished by many individuals, there are times where it simply makes more sense to hire the professionals for something as important as this. Not many people will want to install a mammoth 350 pound safe on their own. As always, do your research and go with a company with a good reputation.
